Psalm 42:2-3 (NIV)
“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’”
In life troubles and loss threaten to overwhelm us all too often. It is an unfortunate part of living in a sinful world. We often feel helpless in the face of our trials and tribulations. It can be a traumatic event, or a secret, inner pain that gnaws at the soul, allowing no respite or relief. We all have our occasional valleys of shadows we try to get through on the road of life. We each experience at some points in our lives walks through dark, gloomy tunnels where fear and distress permeate the walls and create thick fogs that hide the light at the end. When someone does something wrong, my reaction to their actions is tempered by the way they either admit or deny the deed. When they will not admit what they have done wrong, I am angrier than when they own up to it.
Psalm 86:5 (LB) O Lord, you are so good and kind, so ready to forgive, so full of mercy for all who ask your aid.
Numbers 14:20 (NRSV) Then the Lord said, “I do forgive, just as you have asked.”
Once when I was a child we were without electricity for five days due to severe thunderstorms in our area. Fortunately we had a gas-powered generator. Of course the cable was out, but we had a set of rabbit ears. My friend from down the street and myself had been playing with this antenna, in spite of my dad’s insistence that we leave it in the closet. Sure enough, with the power and cable out, he needed that antenna to get the local news and weather reports. Guess what? When he went to find it, it was nowhere to be found. Forgiveness is an action that most of us struggle with. I want to look at four facets of forgiveness, which God has been trying to make me understand lately. They are forgiving others, forgiving us, asking God for forgiveness and accepting God’s forgiveness.
Matthew 6:14-15 Your heavenly Father will forgive you if you forgive those who sin against you; but if you refuse to forgive them, he will not forgive you.
Colossians 3:13 Be gentle and ready to forgive; never hold grudges. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
