“So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons” (2 Samuel 9:11 NIV).
Who in the world is Mephibosheth and what possessed his momma to give him such a name? Well, I can’t answer the second question, but I can shed some light on the first. Mephibosheth was a man who was living way below his potential. He was the grandson of King Saul and the son of Prince Jonathan, but he lived like a pauper. The charger for my cell phone died. Fortunately, I had a spare charger unit and switched to it. I looked at the old one and wondered briefly if it could be fixed. It seemed somehow to be a waste to just toss it in the garbage. But the parts and the effort to fix it would probably be far more expensive than the cost of a new charger. Love, ah… it’s easy for us to love each other. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s easy to love members of your family, of your church, and it’s easy to love friends. But how about the hard-to-love?
What about the person that has wronged you? The person who has talked bad about you, spread gossip, rumors? The person that did you wrong in a business deal, at school or at a social function? The relationship of a prophet to God & to the people is an interesting one. The identification is with both. The prophet of God is also one with the people of God, & their sin becomes his sin; their pain becomes his pain. In like manner the prophet sees & understands the deep mysteries of God, sees with the eyes of God & understands at a level, sometimes too deep for words, the effect of people`s sin on the heart of God.

“First of all…” Paul urges us to relate to God & to mankind in a way that promotes the salvation of Christ & the knowledge of the truth. The heart of God is concerned with reconciliation & not with condemnation. Most people have strong opinions about what is currently taking place in our national government. Scandal is the byword of the media & the personal lives of our elected officials have come under the closest scrutiny over the last fifty years.
